On September 18th, one of our chapter initiates, Bro. Kelvin Harris, was invited as a guest panelist at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 43rd Annual Community Empowerment Dinner. The dinner was being hosted by the General President, Bro. Mark Tillman. The panel discussion focused on education and mentoring; two key cornerstones of the Tillman administration. The panel featured some of the more thought provoking leaders in the country and Alpha as well. Panelist such as Bros. Kevin Powell, Roland Martin, Congressman Bobby Scott, and Phillip Agnew all provided their thoughts and ideas on ways to improve our communities.
Bro. Harris was a 2006 spring initiate of Alpha, by way of Beta Beta Lambda during Bro. Aluko’s administration. After completing his Master’s degree in Higher Education at Florida International University he began working for the United Negro College Fund. He now resides in Arlington Virginia where he is completing his Ed.D. at Northeastern University. Immediately after moving to Virginia, Bro. Harris transferred his membership to the Kappa Phi Lambda chapter. I caught up with Bro. Harris and asked him to share a few thoughts about the event with the chapter.
“It was a great experience and I was happy to be invited by Nationals. Felt good to know that I had a voice on matters such as education and I am looking forward to continuing to work with Nationals. The best part of the event was that the General President was very adamant in getting young brothers involved with headquarters.”
